Which side of a cannabis seed is planted down

Seed Pointy End Up ?

I see advice from Subcool that says “plant the seed pointy end up”, but the included picture seems to designate the blunt end as the pointy end ??

pointy bit down round part up isn’t it? I’m sure the tap root cracks the point part and grows that way
its been a while since I popped any beans though

Just drop it in. If its not strong enough to break the surface then oh well. The root will grow down regardless of how you position it.

dont put the pointy side UP. your going to fuck it up man, i’ve done it every way, the most efficient way is DOWN.

I was just going to say. it will figure it out.

lol this is stupid. Ive put seeds pointy side up and the root grew strait up i put pointy side down and the root grew strait up WTF! just lay it on its side. If you think about it too much then it will never get planted.

Unfounded, non proved, misinformation. Seriously, why would it matter from indoors to outside?

Edit: Yes, the taproot first breaks through the pointy end of the seed, and yes it will push the rounded end up and out. The biggest issue is how deep your plant the seed, and how compact the soil is. If your using a good soil that isnt brick solid then it doesn’t matter.

Wow,and I thought I was grumpy. I stated facts. I never said squat about post count, which if you look through other posts of mine, you will see I say the same thing.Post count means nothing, but quality and accuracy does. Get your panties out of a bunch, and go smoke a bowl or something. I know there are others more experienced than myself, and you for that matter. But hey, if you want to think that you have done, seen, and know it all, then that’s cool, but if your going to say that your way is the only way, then get ready for a shit storm around this place.

To the OP, wait for more responses I guess. Read around a bit more on the stickies. You can find every possible answer with a bit of searching, and never take one persons advice till it has been confirmed to death.

Seedling is growing upside down, taproot is above the soil!

Is your cannabis seedling growing upside down? Has the tap root come above the soil?

If your root is growing straight up like in the picture below, it’s not good. This is most common in seedling plugs. The tender white root tip has a good chance of drying out or being exposed to too much light. You want to strongly consider doing some “plant surgery” to turn this little seedling around to the right direction

The first thing to do is get a new Rapid Rooter. Since your seed already has a relatively long root, cut the plug open lengthwise so you can gently place the seedling inside in the right position without having to “push” down on the seed.

Now gently extract the seed from its original home with a pair of tweezers making sure to touch only the shell and not the root (the root is the most sensitive part)! Now lay the seedling in the middle of your newly split open Rapid Rooter and gently close the plug around it again.

Most seedling plugs will go back into place easily, and you’ll barely be able to tell it’s been opened

Since your seedling has already sprouted and has been in placed into the right growing position, it’ll probably pop its head out within just 12-24 hours! Sometimes you see just the leaves, but occasionally you actually see the seedling push the shell above ground.

When this happens the shell usually falls off on its own as the seedling grows!

When Should I NOT Do Surgery?

Sometimes you can see the young taproot of a cannabis seedling but the situation isn’t as dire. If the root is already pointed in the right direction, it’s probably going to be just fine! But if you’re worried, you can cover up the root until the leaves actually make it to the surface.

For example you could tear a tiny piece off the edge of this Rapid Rooter and gently lay it on top. Or if you were in soil you could sprinkle a tiny bit of soil over the seedling. The seedling will push it off as it grows upward.

This case isn’t so bad because the root is already facing down, in the correct direction. Note: This seedling was just watered, but typically the Rapid Rooter should never look this wet. It should be moist but not shiny.

If you leave it alone, the seed will start to rise up, and open to reveal the seedling’s cotyledons (first, round leaves)

The cotyledons unfurl and then the regular cannabis leaves between to grow. Here’s another view of that same seedling from above only a few hours later. Even though it may have looked a bit weird at first, this seedling is completely normal and will grow just fine from now on!

Most of the Time Seedlings Take Care of Themselves!

When you see your seedling looks like this, where the part of the root exposed to the surface already looks green like a stem, you don’t need to do anything.

After germination, the tip goes down and stays white, and the other side that’s contained in the shell tries to work its way up, and that part of the stem turns green. Sometimes it looks like the root is going upside down because it appears that it’s not strong enough to be able to push the seed up.

As long as the tip of the root stays wet the seedling will be fine! The “root” is the same as what is going to become the stem. If it appears green it means that part of the root is already in “stem” mode and isn’t sensitive to the light.

If you just wait a little everything will have righted itself Here’s that seedling 12 hours later…

12 hours after that, the leaves have completely emerged!

If you hadn’t been watching you wouldn’t even have known anything happened!

Seed position root tip up or down in rw?

Hey guys. I just want to get this straight, when placing your germinated seed into rw do you place the root tip up or down in the rw? i have been looking at some amsterdamn sites and they say root tip up is the proper orientation for the root to properly use its energy to emerge the embrio leaves on the surface. I have been sowing them root tip down and i did notice that the one seedling i had used its energy to reposition itself when i pulled it out it was curled around. Any body else have some input on this? thanks guys.

Ive always used root tip down, and i dont have any problems unless you plant them too deep. Then they have a bend in them somtimes but it doesn’t effect growth much.

Their was one seedling that i had, That had the two coytledons open but nothing happened for days so i pulled it out and the root had looped around in a circle then i guess ran outta energy. How come on all these amsterdam sites they tell us root tip up, just doesnt make sense to me!

You’re on rollitup.org now. You’re with people who actively grow and know what the hell they’re talking about. The advice you’ve been given here is to plant the ROOT TIP DOWN. Now whether you chose to believe amsterdam. or us, is your decision.

look at were the point of the seed is that end of the seed goes down itll grow twords the light so not the most important thing ever. pointed side down, if the root is pointing the other way its ok. point down

hey you can put the root up or down but it is best to put the root facing up coz it does this weird turn thing and pushes the seed up. make sure the white root is still covered though or it will pop thru the dirt. if you germinate with paper towels first you will notice the white root curls and that is the turn thing i am talking about. im not a scientist so i cant tell you in exact detail what happens but trust me. i have had seeds sprout thru the dirt within 24 hours with root up where it took 4 days for ones that where root down. no harm in both but alot easier root up. hope this is helpful.

also if you dont give your sprouts sunlight asoon as they come thru the dirt the stem will keep growing upwards because the plant is looking for sunlight. just something i have learnt

True, planting root tip up will not stop the seedling from sprouting. but I disagree with you that it is BETTER. In fact, My experiments have shown that root tip DOWN is MUCH better. Thats where its MEANT to go, and if you have already pointed it into the right direction, you have saved it some effort and saved the process some time.
